Granite vs. Quartz Countertops: Which Is Right for Your Kitchen?

One main focal point when remodeling your kitchen or bathroom: countertops. With so many types to choose from, how do you decide?

Two of the most beautiful and popular countertop materials are granite and quartz. Both have their merits in the kitchen or bathroom, and each is unique enough to give your space that certain kind of magazine-ready flair.

As a one-stop shop for countertops, we love both of these options! Tile Superstore & more has compiled a guide to granite vs. quartz to help you decide.

Granite Countertops

Granite countertops are mined from granite quarries in large slabs, which are then shaped to fit your kitchen. Because of this, no two granite countertops are the same.

Granite is great for kitchens and offers a beautiful look in various colors and patterns.

Let’s take a closer look at some of the features of granite countertops.

Durability

Granite is able to withstand heat, scratches, and stains. It is known for its longevity and ability to withstand most kitchen activities.

Heat Resistance

Granite is heat-resistant, which means it is suitable for placing hot pots and pans directly on the surface.

Maintenance

Granite by itself is very low maintenance. However, it does require special sealing to protect against stains and spills. How often you need the countertops resealed depends on the type of granite and the usage.

But don’t let sealing your granite scare you—it takes approximately 20 minutes to apply the product, let it set, and wipe it off. And it is easy to clean granite with mild soap and water.

Cost

Granite countertops can vary in price but are usually less expensive than quartz. The cost typically depends on the type of granite, the thickness, and installation.

Quartz Countertops

Quartz countertops, unlike granite, are engineered and manufactured, which means they have a more consistent look than quartz.

Quartz is available in a wide range of colors and patterns.

Let’s look at some specifics about quartz countertops.

Durability

Quartz is highly durable and resistant to scratches, stains, and impacts. It does not require sealing like granite.

Non-Porous

Quartz countertops are non-porous, which means they don’t absorb water. They are also highly resistant to mold, bacteria, and mildew and easy to clean.

Heat Resistance

While quartz is generally heat-resistant, you should still use trivets or pot holders to protect the surface from extreme heat.

It's worth noting that quartz contains resin, which can fade in UV light, making it unsuitable for outdoor use or areas that are exposed to UV light.

Maintenance

Quartz is low maintenance and does not require sealing. It is easy to clean quartz countertops with mild soap and water.

Cost

Quartz countertops are more expensive than granite countertops. However, the cost varies by brand, design, and installation.

The truth is that neither granite nor quartz is indestructible. Both can stain, scratch, or chip. The same basic care and maintenance apply to both materials.

If you ever chip your granite countertop, the repair will likely be unnoticeable because the depth and dimension camouflage it. If you chip a quartz countertop, you’ll probably always see where the repair was done.

Where quartz really excels is if you want the classic marble look. Most natural marbles are not recommended for kitchen countertops because they are high-maintenance.

Now that you know the differences between quartz and granite countertops, it’s time to make a decision!
